Man Utd’s midfield still remains a puzzle yet to be solved. For over 5 years now, Man Utd have had issues in their midfield area. When Dutch manager Erik ten Hag was announced as the new manager, hopes were risen throughout the fanbase, the belief was the puzzle will finally be solved.
Now, this is the complete opposite. With the first game vs Brighton kicking off on Sunday, Man Utd have lost 4 midfielders, and are yet to find suitable replacements, other than Christian Eriksen who signed as a free agent.
However, on the other side, talks are advancing with Frenkie de Jong, with personal terms already agreed and an agreement on the fee with Barça, it’s all about the Spanish club paying the £17 million to him, which he’s owed. If not paid, he won’t leave the club.
Chelsea are also interested, the player may favour a move despite agreeing personal terms with Man Utd, due to the Champions League pull.
Reports coming out suggest Ruben Neves is a possible replacement, should they lose out on de Jong, from the fans point of view, it’s not a bad signing, he’s a good player and is Premier League proven.
But with neither signing sealed, Man Utd go into the game vs Brighton with no recognised additional holding midfielder.
While other Premier League sides are strengthening their squad, Man Utd haven’t exactly followed, with only 3 signings so far. The board is to be question, wether they mean well for the club this season, so they can compete for Champions League football, but the sluggish attitude towards transfers doesn’t show this.
The question is, should Man Utd rely on their youth? Zidane Iqbal and Charlie Savage have impressed in pre season. James Garner and Hannibal are also capable playing in the Premier League.
